The GCSE French speaking exam consists of 3 tasks : a role-play, a photo-card and a conversation. Before the exam, you have 12 minutes to prepare your answers to the role and the photocard.
In this post, let's have a look at how to be successful in the GCSE role-play task at Foundation and Higher tiers.
What is included in the task?
- The task will include an introduction with a situation / context. It will also indicate if you need to address the other person as "tu" (informal, when talking to a friend) or "vous" ( formal, when talking to someone you don't know at a ticket office, in a restaurant, at the tourist office etc). Make sure you use the correct pronouns ( tu/ ton/ ta/ tes) (vous/ votre / vos) especially in the questions you have to ask.
- For Foundation and Higher tiers, the task includes 5 bullets points, one unprepared question marked as ! and one question ask marked as ?
- For Foundation and Higher tiers, remember to keep your answers short but answer in full sentences. A full sentence must include a conjugated verb.
- For Foundation, you will have to use the present tense only in your answers
- For Higher, you will have to use at 2 different verb tenses
What do I need to know to use in my answers?
1. You have to know the "little words" :

2. You have to know key verbs and opinion verbs in the present tense: (Foundation)

•On peut - We/ You can
3. You have to know verbs and opinions in the present , past and future tenses: (Higher)

•Je joue – j’ai joué – je jouerai – je jouerais
•Je vais – je suis allé – j’irai – j’irais
•J’aime – j’ai aimé – j’aimerai – j’aimerais

•C’est – c’était – ce sera – ce serait

4. You have to be able to understand time phrases to use the correct tense: (Higher)
PAST
= dernier / dernière, hier,
passé, récent, récemment
FUTURE
= prochain / prochaine, demain, dans l’avenir, projets
CONDITIONAL
= idéal(e/s),
de rêve
5. You have to know key phrases to ask a question:
•C’est combien? How much is it?
•Il y a….? Is there ...?
•On peut….? Can we ...?
•C’est quel quai? Which platform is it?
•À quelle heure commence…? What does ... start?
•À quelle heure part le train / le car? What does the train/ coach leave?
•Où est… / sont….? Where is .../ are ...?
•Tu aimes…? / Vous aimez...? Do you like ... ? (informal/ formal)
•Tu as…? / Vous avez ...? Do you have ... ? (informal/ formal)
How is the role-play marked?
The role-paly is marked out of 15 marks.
•You
will be marked for COMMUNICATION out of 2 for each bullet points
•You
will also be marked for overall KNOWLEDGE and UNDERSTANDING
•Remember to respond
to each bullet point using only
a sentence
